This set of maps shows detailed, neighborhood (里) population statistics and Protestant church locations for most (32 of 37) districts of Tainan City. The purpose of the maps is to examine where the Protestant churches are located in relation to the distribution of the population. This kind of information can be useful for prayer and for identifying neighborhoods that could be strategic locations for new churches.

Protestant church locations for five districts of Tainan City – the core urban districts of Anping, North, South, East, and West Central – are not located on any of the maps in this set. This is because these districts have a relatively high number of churches and the amount of work required to locate them on the maps would not be justified for a mapping project whose focus is on the more rural areas of Tainan. However, the population and gender ratios for the neighborhoods of these five districts are included on the all-Tainan City maps of population and gender ratios.

The maps for Tainan City fall into two categories:

THE FIRST CATEGORY includes 11 maps that cover all of Tainan City. Three of these maps give information at the district level while the remaining eight maps give neighborhood level statistics.

The maps in this category are:

Map 1 shows the overall population / # of Protestant churches ratios for all 37 districts of Tainan City. The two orange districts on the map have only one church for every 20,000 people, or more, and are, statistically, the two districts in Tainan that are most in need of additional churches.

Map 2 shows the December, 2017, population for each of the 762 neighborhoods that comprise the 37 districts of Tainan City. The total December, 2017, population for the 37 districts was 1,904,923.

Map 3 gives the population density for all 37 districts of Tainan City.

Map 4 shows district borders and Protestant church locations superimposed over satellite imagery. Since this map covers all of Tainan City it cannot show the same degree of detail as the satellite imagery maps for the 18 combinations of districts (the second category of maps described below). However, the satellite map for all of Tainan City is useful in that it provides a large, overall view in which sparsely inhabited mountainous and coastal areas can easily be seen.

Map 5 shows the population for the 582 neighborhoods in the 32 districts plus Protestant church locations. The total December, 2017, population for the 32 districts was 1,315,694. A table showing details of the population and number of Protestant churches in the five core urban districts (shown in grey) is also included.

Map 6 shows the locations of all 150 Protestant churches listed in the 2017-2018 Taiwan Church Handbook* for the 32 districts. The number, though not the locations, of the Protestant churches in the five core urban districts (shown in grey) is given for each of the five districts.

Maps 7, 8, and 9 show the locations of the Protestant churches in the 32 districts plus the neighborhoods that fall into each of three population ranges. These three maps are designed to show the relation of church locations to neighborhoods having high (pop >2,000), low (pop< 2,000), and very low (pop < 1,000) populations. Many of the high population neighborhoods have a church within their borders or nearby. The maps for the lower population ranges, though, show many neighborhoods that have no nearby church. When the population is low, or very low, starting a church could be particularly challenging so other ways of bringing the gospel to these neighborhoods may need to be considered.

Maps 10 and 11 show the gender ratio, in terms of the number of males for every 100 females (a ratio that Taiwan government statistics use), for all 762 neighborhoods in Tainan City. The blue areas have significantly more females than males while in the red areas there are significantly more males than females. In the green areas the number of males and females are closer to being balanced.

Map 11 shows more information than Map 10 since it uses an expanded scale for the gender ratio.

Instead of three ranges of the ratio, eight ranges are used. Using the greater number of ranges makes it possible to identify neighborhoods, such as those colored dark blue, purple, red, and brown, where the number of males and females are far from balanced. Extremely low gender ratios, the purple and dark blue areas, were seen for several neighborhoods in Chiku District in December, 2017, according to government population data. However, the January, 2018, government population data for Chiku District show that there were only 18 neighborhoods (里) in Chiku, instead of the 23 neighborhoods listed in the December, 2017, population data. The January, 2018, neighborhood population statistics for Chiku show that the lowest neighborhood gender ratio was only 98.3, which is in the green range of the ratio. Apparently as a result of the neighborhood border changes involved in the reduction of the number of neighborhoods from 23 to 18, population statistics for 2018 no longer identify any neighborhood in Chiku District as having a very low gender ratio.

THE SECOND CATEGORY includes maps that show close-up views of the 32 districts for which Protestant church locations are shown on the all-Tainan City maps. There are 13 such maps, each covering from one to four of these districts. On these maps there is enough space to give the name in Chinese characters for each neighborhood in each of the districts.

The maps in this category are:

Map 12 shows the 13 combinations of districts, labelled A through M, which together cover the 32 districts of Tainan City for which the locations of Protestant churches are given. The five core urban districts of Tainan, which are not included in any of the 13 combinations, are shown in grey on Map 12.

For each of the 13 combinations of districts three different maps were made:

1 Neighborhood population and Protestant church locations.

2 Neighborhood gender ratios and Protestant church locations

3 Neighborhood borders and Protestant church locations superimposed over satellite imagery.

These maps are identified as A1, A2, A3 for the A combination of districts, B1, B2, B3 for the B combination of districts, etc.

A fourth map was made for two of the districts: I4 was made for Annan District (pop 192,000) and K4 was made for Yungkang District (pop 234,000). These two maps show the populations of neighborhood groupings within the district plus Protestant church locations. The fourth map was made for these two districts because they have high populations (much higher than the population for any of the other 30 districts mapped for the Tainan project). When a district has such a high population then it may be that areas within the district that have no church might be home to a very large number of people. These two maps show that this is the case for both Annan and Yungkang Districts.

The data table in Map I4 shows that there are four neighborhood groupings within Annan which have only one Protestant church for every 20,000 people, or more. Also neighborhood grouping I, the western half of Annan, has 30,400 people and no Protestant church at all. Although the overall Protestant church presence in Yungkang District is much stronger than it is in Annan District, there are two neighborhood groupings within Yungkang, A, in the northern part of the district, and B, in the eastern part of the district, that have only one Protestant church for every 20,000 people, or more.

It is hoped that the 53 maps in the Tainan set of maps will be helpful for understanding the overall situation of the Protestant churches in Tainan. It is also hoped that the more detailed information given in the maps for the combinations of districts will be useful for prayer and the planning of ministry, especially the starting of new churches in less-reached areas of Tainan.

I am very thankful for the willingness of Taiwan Missionary Fellowship to post these maps on their website.
