This set of maps shows detailed (at the neighborhood (Li”) and village ( tswun”) level) population statistics and Protestant church locations for all of Changhua County. The full set of maps fall into three groups:

1.) Maps that show the information for all of Changhua County. These maps give the “big picture” for the county, but do not give any specific information for any of the 589 neighborhoods / villages that comprise the county.

2.) Close-up maps that show the name of each neighborhood / village in Chinese characters, the population range (shown by the color), the population as a number, and the locations of Protestant churches. A total of 12 close-up maps together show this information for all 26 subdivisions of Changhua. A total of 1, 2, or 3 subdivisions are shown in each of the 12 maps.

3.) Satellite imagery maps were made for each of the 26 county subdivisions. These maps take neighborhood / village boundaries and Protestant church locations and superimpose them on satellite imagery. The satellite maps do not include the names of the neighborhoods / villages, nor population data, as they are meant to be used with the corresponding maps in the second category above, which do provide that information. The main advantage of the satellite imagery maps is that they make it easy to see concentrations of population and then compare those with the locations of churches. Separate satellite maps were made for each subdivision of Changhua so that the closest view possible could be made for each subdivision. In many cases cloud cover in the satellite imagery limited how much the maps could be zoomed in and still give good visibility.

The all-Changhua County maps include:

Maps A and A2 which show population at the neighborhood / village level. All population statistics are for April, 2015, and come from the individual government websites for the 26 subdivisions of the county.

Maps B and B2 show the locations of the Protestant churches listed for Changhua County in the 2015 – 2016 Taiwan Church Handbook*. In map B2 buffer lines that show all areas within 3 kilometers of a Protestant church were added.

Map C shows population plus Protestant church locations. Map C2 shows the same information as Map C but adds the 3 km buffer lines around the churches. Map C3 shows all places that have a population greater than, or equal to, 2,000 and church locations. Map C4 shows all places that have a population less than 2,000 and church locations. Map C5 shows all places that have a population less than 1,000 and church locations. Maps C3, C4, and C5 all have the 3 km buffer lines around the churches.

Map D shows the 12 groupings of county subdivisions that were used to make the maps that include the neighborhood / village names in Chinese characters, population as a number for each place, and church locations. These groupings of the county subdivisions were lettered from E through P.

Maps Q and Q2 show the April, 2015, gender ratio – given in terms of how many males there are for every 100 females – for each neighborhood / village in Changhua County. Map Q shows that there are many places in Changhua where there are more than 105 males for every 100 females. Map Q2 expands the number of ranges used for the gender ratio in Map Q from 3 to 6 ranges. The expanded ranges show that the highest values for the gender ratio are concentrated in the southwest part of the county. The blue places on the map, which show that there are 95 males, or fewer, for every 100 females, are primarily in the larger towns / cities.

The subdivision grouping maps are included in alphabetic order from E through P. After each of the subdivision grouping maps a separate satellite imagery map is included for each subdivision shown on the grouping map. An exception is for the J grouping. In this case, because the north-south length of Fangyuan Township is so long, two more satellite imagery maps were made for the township. The maps for the southern and northern parts of Fangyuan are more zoomed in and so detail can be seen more clearly on these maps than on the one map that covers all of Fangyuan.

It is hoped that this set of maps will be useful tools for comparing the population distribution and the Protestant church distribution for all of Changhua County as well as at the neighborhood / village level for each of the 26 subdivisions of the county. It is also hoped that comparison of the subdivision groupings maps with the satellite imagery maps will provide some useful insights for the ongoing task of bringing the gospel to all of Changhua County.

I am again thankful for the Taiwan Missionary Fellowship’s willingness to post this set of maps on the TMF Mission Resource Center.
