Introduction to the Set of Six Maps of Combined Protestant Church Membership Distribution For All Areas of Taiwan

The “ 2007 Taiwan Church Annual Report* ” (published in October, 2008) gives the combined membership (which includes children who are part of Sunday School classes) of all the Protestant churches in a given township for all the townships of Taiwan. The six maps in this series show the combined church membership for all the townships of Taiwan. Exceptions are the three city districts of Hsinchu City, the two city districts of Chiayi City, and the six townships of Penghu County. In each of these cases the statistics in the 2007 Taiwan Church Annual Report were not given separately for the city districts and townships. The combined church membership for each of these cities as a whole and for Penghu County as a whole is given on the face of the maps in this series.

The first map shows the church membership data for all of Taiwan.

In the second map only those areas for which the combined Protestant church membership is below 1,000 people are shown. This map shows there are 132 townships for which the total Protestant church membership is less than 500 people and another 50 townships for which the total church membership is between 501 and 1,000 people. These townships together total 182, which is slightly over half of the 352 townships of Taiwan (There are actually 358 townships in Taiwan but the 6 townships of Penghu County are not included in any of the maps in this set.)

The third map also shows those areas for which the combined Protestant church membership is below 1,000 people but uses an expanded scale so that more detail can be seen. This map shows that there are 28 townships in Taiwan where the total church membership is very small, less than 100 people.

The fourth map was made to focus on the 28 areas where total church membership is less than 100 people. Since none of these areas is in a major city, the major city map insets were removed from this map and this provided space to list the name and total population for each of these 28 areas.

The fifth map shows those areas of Taiwan for which the combined Protestant church membership is between 1,001 and 5,000 people.

The sixth map shows those areas, nearly all located in or near a major city, where combined Protestant church membership is greater than 5,000 people. These are the centers of church numbers, strength, and resources in Taiwan.

May this set of maps be helpful to the believers of Taiwan as they seek to better understand the state of the Church in all parts of the island.
