Introduction to the Set of 24 Maps of Total Protestant Church Membership As a Percentage of Local Population For All Areas of Taiwan

In October, 2008, a very useful new report entitled the “2007 Taiwan Church Annual Report*” was published in Taichung City.  This report gives the combined membership (which includes children who are part of Sunday School classes) of all the Protestant churches in a given township, for all the townships of Taiwan.

The statistics in the report show that the combined membership of all the Protestant churches in Taiwan totals 3.93% of Taiwan’s population!  The maps in this set show how this percentage varies from place to place in Taiwan.  The range of this percentage is extreme.  In one township of Yunlin County this percentage is 0.04% while for a mountainous township of Pingtung County the percentage is 82.1%!

There are four maps that cover all of Taiwan in this set.  The first of these shows the combined Protestant church membership as a percentage of local population for all areas of Taiwan. The second map shows those areas of Taiwan for which this percentage is greater than 5%.  The third map shows the areas where this percentage is between 2% and 5%.  The fourth map shows the areas where this percentage is below 2%.   A bilingual name list for all the numbered areas on the maps can be seen by clicking on “Taiwan – Overall Information” and then scrolling just past the five maps located there.

The fourth map shows that there are 83 areas for which this percentage is below 1% and another 93 areas for which this percentage is in the range 1 - 2%.  There are also 4 townships, which are shown on the first map but cannot be seen on the second, third, or fourth maps, where there is no Protestant church at all and so they are counted as 0%.  These three categories (0%, 0-1%, and 1-2%) together include 180 townships, which is 51.1% of the 352 townships of Taiwan.  (Note: there are actually 358 townships in all of Taiwan but the 6 townships in Penghu County are not included in any of these maps because separate church membership statistics were not given for these six townships in the 2007 Taiwan Church Annual Report.)

The second map shows only those areas for which the combined church membership as a percentage of local population exceeds 5 %.  There are 78 townships that fall into this category, most of which are located in the central mountains, the east coast, and in or near the major cities.

The number of townships that fall into each of the nine ranges of percent church membership is given below.  The percentage that the number of townships in each range is of the total number of townships in Taiwan is also given:

0% (no church)   4 townships, which is   1.1% of the total of 352 townships

0.04 – 1.0%       83 townships, which is 23.6% of the total number of townships

1.01 – 2.0%        93 townships, which is 26.4% of the total number of townships

2.01 – 3.0%        47 townships, which is 13.4 % of the total number of townships

3.01 – 5.0%        47 townships, which is 13.4% of the total number of townships

5.0 1 – 8.0%       23 townships, which is   6.5% of the total number of townships

8.01 – 15.0%      17 townships, which is   4.8% of the total number of townships

15.01 – 35.0%    25 townships, which is   7.1% of the total number of townships

35.01 – 82.1%    13 townships, which is   3.7%  of the total number of townships

The total population that falls into each of the nine ranges of percent church membership is given below.  The percentage that the population in each range is of the total population of Taiwan, 22,698,793, is also given:  (Note: The total population for Taiwan given here does not include the population of Penghu County.)

0% (no church)  31,090, which is    0.14% of the total Taiwan population of 22,698,793

0.04 – 1.0%   2,894,555, which is  12.8% of the total Taiwan population.

1.01 – 2.0%   5,901,840, which is  26.0% of the total Taiwan population.

2.01 – 3.0%   4,053,642, which is  17.9% of the total Taiwan population.

3.01 – 5.0%   5,089,028,  which is 22.4% of the total Taiwan population.

5.01 – 8.0%   2,553,158,  which is 11.2% of the total Taiwan population.

8.01 – 15.0% 1,422,500,  which is   6.3% of the total Taiwan population.

15.01 – 35.0%  639,126,  which is   2.8% of the total Taiwan population.

35.01 – 82.1%  113,854, which is    0.5% of the total Taiwan population.

This data shows that 12.9 % of Taiwan’s population lives in areas where the combined Protestant church membership is less than 1 % of local population.  A total of 38.9 % of Taiwan’s population live where this percentage is in the range 0 - 2 %.    At the higher end of the percentage ranges, 9.6% of Taiwan’s population lives in areas where the combined church membership as a percentage of local population is above 8%.

The other 20 maps in this set show the combined Protestant church membership as a percentage of local population for each of the counties (except for Penghu County) and major cities of Taiwan.  For some of the county maps the lowest three percentage ranges were each divided into two ranges so that more detail could be seen in the data.

This set of maps shows details of where the churches are strong and where church members are a very small percentage of local population.   It is hoped that these maps will be helpful tools to missionaries, pastors, and Christians in general in Taiwan as they plan ministry and pray for all areas of the island.
